    Mission in Koh Thom

On Saturday 20th September 2008, I went to Koh Thom to investigate the water supply situation in the area. It was a request from my dear friend, Samnang, one of the prominent member of the PS Group. The other group members who joined the course was Luong and Visal Sot. Samnang intended to help both his sister and brother-in-law to complete their degree in Urban Development field which they are studying in one university in Japan.

We set off at 7am and had breakfast in Ta Kmao town. We drove for an hour to reach the sub-province of Koh Thom. We crossed the Basac River and by 9 am, we commenced our mission.

The reason we chose Koh Thom for our investigation over the existence of Arsenic is because the region is rated and reported that the region is experiencing the worst moment with Arsenic, in all of Cambodia. In according to the report, they say there are 99% of the regional digging wells in which has Arsenic.

Arsenic is a semi-metallic element, labelled "As", and is very poisonous. Living people who has Arsenic atoms running through their veins maybe seen as in these pictures (taken from one villager)

       DSC01718.jpg picture by denith

Our purpose is to question the villagers about their daily water need and supply, how safe are them and about the Arsenic problems. For the first few villages, the water supply is "safe" enough to use, without any concern of the Arsenic. The villages often visited by different groups of people whose main purpose is about the  people and Arsenic situation.

As for me, seeing a beautiful place turns into a region where water is no safe for people is quite a pain. I just wish that there will be speedy resolutions to the current crisis of the villages. However, there are only investigations and study, but there is no report about future plan to develop the area. People are waiting for assistance, very much in their heart, because they don't want their children to live in the future without the pain they endure today. Even the villagers have more knowledge about the Arsenice problems and relevant information, they can only do a few thing to deal with this issues. wik

       DSC01651.jpg picture by denith

So far, our study tells us that only two digging wells are classified as "safe." for the entire village, it is not enough. Clean water is very vital for people's life.

Before we left Koh Thom, we went to visit some patients who have Arsenic disease. They stay home all the time after the disease came, and the society loses one more labour potentiality. While it can not afford to lose more, the problem is growing.

       DSC01602.jpg picture by denith

I hope that the ministry of urban development will impose a new policy to save the situation as soon as possible, as the new government has finally been formed through the 4th general election. And I hope our people will understand more about the disease and create preventative measure against its spreading.

By the way, along the road, I noticed this large Buddha statue:

Khmer Vs Laotian Vs Vietnamese Ancient Technology

After digging to a depth of 100 meters last year, Laos scientists found traces of copper wire dating back 1000 years, and came to the conclusion that their ancestors already had a telephone network one thousand years ago.

So, not to be outdone, in the weeks that followed, Vietnamese scientists dug 200 meters and headlines in the Vietnamese papers read: ' Vietnamese scientists have found traces of 2000 year old optical fibers, and have concluded that their ancestors already had advanced high-tech digital telephone 1000 years earlier than Laos'.

One week later, a Cambodian newspaper reported the following: 'After digging as deep as 500 meters, Cambodian scientists have found absolutely nothing. They have concluded that 5000 years ago, their ancestors were already using wireless technology.

    Info: Wikipedia's

My most anticipated movie this year.

I rate this new James Bond better than of the previous ones. Why?

The reason is, this James Bond characteristic is more "realistic" than the of the previous film. Also, in the "Casino Royale", James Bond is more romantic than ever. Moreover is that, the Daniel Criag's James Bond looks more like a skilled, highly-trained, and powerful agent than others.

    Can not wait.

    Roman Empire 'raised HIV threat'

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/7596532.stm

The spread of the Roman Empire through Europe could help explain why those living in its former colonies are more vulnerable to HIV.

The claim, by French researchers, is that people once ruled by Rome are less likely to have a gene variant which protects against HIV.

This includes England, France, Greece and Spain, New Scientist reports.

Others argue the difference is linked to a far larger event, such as the spread of bubonic plague or smallpox.

The idea that something carried by the occupying Romans could have a widespread influence on the genes of modern Europeans comes from researchers at the University of Provence.

They say that the frequency of the variant corresponds closely with the shifting boundaries of the thousand-year empire.

In countries inside the borders of the empire for longer periods, such as Spain, Italy and Greece, the frequency of the CCR5-delta32 gene, which offers some protection against HIV, is between 0% and 6%.

Countries at the fringe of the empire, such as Germany, and modern England, the rate is between 8% and 11.8%, while in countries never conquered by Rome, the rate is greater than this.

    Legionnaire's disease

However, the researchers do not believe that the genetic difference is due to Roman soldiers or officials breeding within the local population - history suggests this was not particularly widespread, and that invading and occupying armies could have been drawn not just from Italy but from other parts of the empire.

Instead, they say that the Romans may have introduced a disease to which people with the CCR5-Delta32 variant were particularly susceptible. This tallies with some other theories of why some have the gene variant, and some do not.

Researchers at the University of Liverpool had suggested that the variant could have offered protection against pandemics such as the Black Death which swept Europe on a regular basis during and after the Roman era.

These, said the Liverpool researchers, were viral illnesses which were lethal to people without the gene variant, raising its frequency from one in 20,000 people to approximately 10% in Northern Europe.

Dr Susan Scott, one of the researchers, said that the idea of Roman occupation being the driving force behind this was another theory to be considered.

"We just don't know. This is just another piece of the jigsaw, but we're waiting for the big piece of evidence which will solve this."

    Source: The Mirror

The Mirror, Vol. 12, No. 576

“Phnom Penh: A discussion between Mr. Ouch Borith, secretary of state of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Mr. Douglas Harvey Monroe Gibson, the ambassador of the Republic of South Africa [to Thailand], showed that the governments of both countries, Cambodia and South Africa, want to improve bilateral cooperation in the field of economy and commerce.

“Mr. Ouch Borith said that considering the planned bilateral cooperation in economy and commerce between both countries, the South African ambassador said that the government of South Africa wants to ask the government of Cambodia to open an honorary consulate in Cambodia as the first step to strengthen and to expand the economic and commercial cooperation.

“The Ambassador said that on 14 and 15 December 2008, he will lead a delegation to attend a trade exhibition in Phnom Penh. South Africa will show red wine and white wine produced in South Africa for sale in Cambodia.

“In the meantime, Mr. Ouch Borith reported to the South African ambassador about economic growth, political stability, and especially, the results of the recent fourth term parliamentary elections in Cambodia.

“The Ambassador said that South Africa has only sightly over 5% economic growth, and he highly assessed that Cambodia has strong economic growth, particularly in 2005 with more than 13%.

“The South African Ambassador went on to comment on the recent fourth term parliamentary elections, although he was in Bangkok, but he observed the election in Cambodia, that the elections were well organized and were free, fair and non-violent, which was a very important step towards implementing democracy in Cambodia.” Rasmei Kampuchea, Vol.16, #4682, 31-1.8-9.2008

    PS for Cambodia

Well! Its been a month that this party was celebrated, and I just received the picture files a few days ago. So here how it was:

NOTE: A video of the PS Group members singing Savada Khmer will be posted in the video box, not included in this entry.

We was considering plan to promote our group for the society. Yes! The PS Group is a group of elite students of Preah Sisowath High School. Thus, we want to do something for our country, just like John F.Kennedy once speak: "Dont ask what your country can do for you, ASK WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR YOUR COUNTRY."

To attend the matter, we decided to gather to express our support for the listing of Prasat Preah Vihear.

However, there are more matters to address. PS Party was a chance for a re-union for old friends. Thus, that party had several meanings for the event.

We started with the usual gathering and telling the story of each of the members:

We are so proud of everyone because they have developed themselves as a good citizen of Cambodia. Of course, the PS Group produces best citizen for Cambodia. that is one of our goal.

    DSC03916.jpg picture by denith

    DSC03919.jpg picture by denith

We didnt made the party that simple. There would be new program introduced. This time, we had a lucky draw game. And guess who won. It is our newest member and the potential successor of Yan Luong's project: Miss. Pheap.

    DSC03952.jpg picture by denith

We will be together for the rest of our life, that is because we love each other so much and that we love the PS Group the way we love Cambodia.

    May there be another ocassion.
