August 10, 2008, 2 days after the summer Olympic open ceremony in Beijing, in Wembley, the latest EPL and FA champions met to open another entertaining season for the finest football(soccer) league in the world.
Manchester United entered the game without their two superstars: Rooney and Ronaldo, while players like Owen Hargreaves, Louis Saha, Anderson and several others missed the game due to injuries and international duties. But this was not disapproving. Manchester United showed Pompey that, even without those players, they are capable of winning the game. Manchester United dominated most of the games, created a few more chances than Pompey did. Despite this fact, Pompey were ready to defence United's non-aggressively offensive force. After 90 minutes of playing, the game ended in a goalless draw and advanced to the penalty shootout.
Lassana Diarra of Portsmouth opened the last stage of the game with a wonderful miss. This gave United's early favour to win the race to 5. Three of Three United's penalty shooters managed each one a goal, and Edwin Van Der Sar, last season's hero in the Champion Leauge Final Penalty Shootout, saved one from 4 shooting. In addition to this sadness, Pompey has to faced one more miss fired, which ultimately gave the Red Devil their consecutive Community Shield trophy winning. To remind of last season, Man Utd also beated Chelea in the penalty shootout.
For this victory, comes tremendous expectations. Questions arised, one of them are: "Will they win the EPL three times in a row this season?", "What about the FA Cup?" and "The two upcoming International Trophies: Super Cup and World Club Champions?"... "are they going to grap all these glories?" "again?"
In that match, Sir Alex introduced their newly promoted youngsters: Freizer Campbell, who did quite well in his 12 minutes of playing. There are two more new faces at Old Trafford who are receiving numerous attendtions: Rafael and Fabio Da Silva, the Brazilian boy wonders who just arrived at Old Trafford this season and made several successful occasion on ManUtd shirt. Will Fergies going to repeat his approach backs in the 1990s when he suddenly promoted young players like Paul Schole, Gary and Philip Neville, David Beckham and Ryan Giggs to own this English League?
